This OPD SPAR grant-funded position would be an excellent complement to a private practice or partial retirement. The position is part-time, providing representation at first appearances in district court and on misdemeanor possession of controlled substance charges only. 

Primary Duties:

Acts as court-appointed counsel representing individuals accused of misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and representing individuals at District Court first appearances.
Represents appointed clients accused of misdemeanor possession of controlled substance in all phases of criminal proceeding, including arraignments, pretrial hearings, etc. 
Responsible for the investigation and preparation of each misdemeanor possession of controlled substance case assigned.
Complies with legal standards and requirements.

Monday – Friday
Variable and part-time
Approx. 20 hours/week with daily court obligations.

Requirements
Qualifications Must be a current member in good standing of the Washington State Bar Association, OR must be a current member in good standing of another State Bar Association AND must become a member of the Washington State Bar Association by passing the next Washington State Bar exam. Criminal defense background is desired. Background Check must meet County Criteria for criminal justice positions. Must have a driving record that meets County standards and possess a valid driver’s license at time of hire and throughout employment. At its sole discretion, Whatcom County may consider combinations of education, experience, certifications, and training in lieu of specifically required qualifications contained herein.
