Salt Lake Legal Defender Association (SLLDA) represents individuals in Salt Lake County who are charged with crimes and cannot afford an attorney. SLLDA is a 180 person legal organization with 100 attorneys, an investigation team, a social services team, and legal assistants. The mission of SLLDA is to advocate for people in the criminal system by providing client-centered services, protecting rights, and promoting social justice.
The entry level trial attorneys begin in Justice Court and receive mentoring and development in assessing cases, interviewing clients, preparing for trial, arguing motions, selecting juries, trying cases and in all aspects of providing excellent representation to clients. Practicing in Justice Courts is for the purpose of training attorneys to represent clients on more serious cases in Third District Court.
The entry level trial attorney position is for an attorney who is a member of the Utah State Bar and has practiced law for three years or less and who has demonstrated an interest in public criminal defense law through their practice, internships, volunteer work or other activities.
A background check is required for this position but not all entries on the background check will impact eligibility for the position.
