• This position represents and counsels indigent clients in Criminal matters throughout Oswego County. Working under the direct supervision of the Public Defender and First Assistant Public Defender, the incumbent exercises independent judgment in managing complex cases and litigation strategy. Responsibilities include researching, drafting, and arguing pre-trial motions, conducting legal research, responding to discovery demands, and meeting with defendants and witnesses. The role also provides oversight, training, and mentorship to Assistant Public Defenders and assists with administrative leadership of the Public Defender’s Office as needed.

    Requirements

    Graduation from an ABA Accredited Law School 

    Admission to practice law in New York State. 

    Two years of experience in the practice of criminal law and/or in Family Court. 

    Residency (at time of appointment) in one of the following counties: Oswego, Cayuga, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, or Onondaga
