Under the supervision of the Mitigation Services Program Director and the Chief Public Defender, the Defender Mitigation Specialist – Regional Managed Assigned Counsel Unit, is a licensed social worker with a Masters in Social Work. This position is tasked with assisting the Managed Assigned Counsel and Regional Public Defender Offices in the Upper Peninsula Region. The Defender Mitigation Specialist shall work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team of diverse professionals to provide zealous advocacy to adult criminal defendants to achieve the best possible legal and life outcomes. This position must adhere to the rules of confidentiality under the attorney-client relationship.
The Defender Mitigation Specialist is responsible for bio-psychosocial interviewing and assessment, social history investigation, forensic case management, advocacy for clients within court, carceral, mental health and social service systems, fostering family interactions and intervention, treatment and sentence planning, complex report writing, preparing clients for testifying in court or presenting allocution, and making direct connections between clients and programs. Social service intervention occurs at all stages of the court process, from the initial arraignment through resolution and sentencing.
Education: Possession of a Master’s Degree in Social Work.
Experience / Qualifications: One to two years’ experience in human services (i.e. mental health,
behavioral health, substance use disorders, criminal justice/corrections). Experience working with individuals and families with diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, education, and economic backgrounds. Knowledge of social, psychological, environmental, economic, legal, and medical factors that influence behavior – including trauma informed practices and interviewing. Understanding of social structures and institutional barriers that cause disparities, such as systemic racism and poverty. Culturally appropriate skills in interviewing, assessment, case management, and treatment planning; knowledge of public and private social service systems and resources. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and persuasively orally and in writing. Ability to organize, interpret and synthesize large quantities of information into persuasive, compelling, and thorough written narratives. Proven ability to work
effectively independently and in a team. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working
relationships within the office and service provider community. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple client and responsibilities.
