The Federal Public Defender, Nevada is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Federal Public Defender in the Non-Capital Habeas Unit. This is a full-time position located in Las Vegas. NCH represents state prisoners in federal habeas corpus proceedings brought under 28 U.S.C. § 2254. NCH is the oldest and largest non-capital habeas unit in the Federal Public Defender system.

Applicants must possess demonstrated commitment to poverty law or indigent criminal defense, strong writing, oral advocacy ability and litigation experience in at least one of the following areas: criminal law, especially in post-conviction or appellate litigation; or complex federal court civil litigation. The position requires occasional travel. Applicants must be team oriented, have at least three years of relevant experience, and be immediately able to undertake representation of habeas petitioners currently litigating in every stage of the habeas proceedings.

Applicant must be a member in good standing of a state bar. Applicants who are not members of the Nevada State Bar must also be willing to comply with the Nevada State Bar’s provisional licensure requirements for federal attorneys to practice in Nevada state courts, which does not require taking the Nevada bar exam. Federal salary and benefits are based upon qualifications and experience, consistent with federal guidelines and regulations. Hiring is based upon the availability of funding.
