EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Competent computer skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Possess an understanding of the unique legal and social needs of the clients the office serves
  • Demonstrate a willingness to participate in community outreach and education efforts
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
  • Membership in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan or obtain membership in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan within probationary period and eligibility to practice under MCR 8.120.
  • Each non-licensed new hire will be allowed one opportunity following hire to take the State Bar of Michigan examination. Following the notification of complete licensure within the minimum of a six-month probationary period, a maximum three month extension to the probationary period may be granted at the discretion of the Public Defender. If licensing is not obtained within the allotted time-period, said new hire will be terminated.
  • Possess a valid Michigan driver's license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.
  • These requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.
EDUCATION
  • Possession of a Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school.
EXPERIENCE
Level 1 - Grade 28:
  • Entry level classification. Employees may advance to LEVEL II after at least two (2) years of Assistant Public Defender I experience with acceptable work performance.
Level 2 - Grade 30:
  • Two (2) years of LEVEL I experience required with acceptable work performance.
Level 3 - Grade 32:
  • Three (3) years of LEVEL II experience required with acceptable work performance.
