We the Defenders Detroit: Detroit is the phoenix born from the ashes anew
D-town was the perfect spot to hold this training. Forget what you heard, Detroit is the phoenix born from the ashes anew. There is a palpable hope that resonates through every business and resident here. Detroit has become one of the most culturally diverse cities in the nation and this tree is now bearing its fruit: the fruit of new ideas and new beginnings. It seems like everyone wants a taste and is rooting for this underdog now. But underdog no longer, Detroit is the title fight contender. Just when you thought this city was down for the count, it bounced back and made it a real fight. But just like public defense, the fight never ends.
The institute ignited with inspiration and kept the fire burning bright throughout. This city is alive and so are the public defenders. If you ever thought hope was ever diminished for us, we’re back and stronger than ever. Public defense has learned that you can’t win this fight alone. Just like Detroit, our diversity is the key to our success. The core staff that hold us up are now our biggest strength. The expanded identities of public defenders have made us not only more inclusive and collaborative, but also much more effective.
Wayne State University is the leader in the holistic defense model and there was nowhere else to be but right here. By their collaboration between the law and social work schools, they embody the new iteration of public defense. The research they provide gives us the academic foundation for what we already know: diversification is the key to success.
Like Detroit, NAPD’s flame burns brighter than ever. A contagious passion percolated throughout the week, and everyone left refreshed and inspired. New friendships were formed, and commitment to the individuals we represent was renewed. Smiles were seen throughout the conference, with a tear or two emerging at a few impassioned moments. I am happy to go home but sad to leave my NAPD family. I am thankful for everyone who attended; they each brought something unique to this experience and contributed an individual piece to this mélange that is public defense. We are the defenders, each and every one.
Thank you to all of you who attended for bringing your authentic selves with you. Thank you to NAPD for putting this all together. Thank you to Wayne State for hosting and doing the work that you do. And thank you to Detroit for inspiring us all. See you next year!
