We Stand United: NAPD Statement on ICE Raids and Militarization in Los Angeles
The National Association for Public Defense (NAPD) is deeply disturbed by the recent ICE raids and subsequent military presence in Los Angeles. The mass arrests have caused fear and harm across immigrant and low-income communities, and the aggressive federal response is a threat not just to individuals, but to the ideals of justice, fairness, and due process that we, as public defenders, are sworn to uphold.
We extend our full and unwavering support to the Director of the Los Angeles Public Defender, Ricardo Daniel García and his entire team. These public defenders—alongside immigration attorneys, community groups, organizers, and countless others—have become the frontline of protection for the rights of California residents targeted by this sweeping enforcement action.
As public defenders, it is not only our profession—it is our mission and calling—to stand in defense of those who have been marginalized, criminalized, and silenced. We are committed to protecting the constitutional rights of all people, regardless of immigration status, race, or economic circumstance. In the face of injustice, our voices will not waver, and our advocacy will not stop.
NAPD also stands in solidarity with the peaceful protestors demanding accountability, compassion, and an end to the overreach of state and federal power. We recognize their courage in standing up for what is right, and we affirm their right to protest free from fear or retaliation.
Let it be known: we will not look away. We will not be silent. We stand with the defenders, the advocates, and the communities of Los Angeles.
We stand united.
We are defenders.
