The National Association for Public Defense (NAPD) recently hosted their Team Mitigation
Institute in Seattle, Washington. This intensive, multidisciplinary event brought together public
defenders from across the country to hone their skills in developing and implementing effective
mitigation strategies for their clients.

The institute offers a unique blend of presentations and hands-on workshops, focusing on
various aspects of mitigation strategy. Participants learned about the importance of gathering
and analyzing evidence, developing compelling narratives, and presenting persuasive
arguments in court. Experienced faculty members guided attendees through real-world case
studies, providing valuable insights and practical advice.

One of the highlights of the institute was the opportunity for participants to work on their own
cases in small groups. This collaborative approach allowed defenders to share ideas, receive
feedback, and refine their mitigation stories. By the end of the program, attendees felt
well-prepared to advocate for their clients with greater confidence and effectiveness.

“I received so many good resources and important information while attending the institute.
Also, presenters and attendees made me feel even more passionate about the work we do for
our clients and I am hoping to return the conference next year.” – Attendee

“I’d recommend this event to others in the field, it’s a great learning experience and networking
opportunity.” – Attendee

The NAPD Team Mitigation Institute is a valuable resource for public defenders seeking to
improve their skills and better serve their communities. By equipping defenders with the tools
they need to build strong mitigation cases, the institute helps to ensure that justice is served for
all.
