The National Association for Public Defense (NAPD) is proud to announce the appointment of its new Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Director, Brittany Gail Thomas (affectionately known as “BGT”). In this role, she will develop initiatives that promote diversity and reduce disparities of all kinds in public defense systems nationwide, especially through training, advocacy, and communications. Brittany will work with NAPD’s membership and support the programs of its DEI and Racial Justice Groups. 

Brittany brings a wealth of experience to their new role.She is a visionary leader, passionate advocate, and unapologetic champion for marginalized and minoritized communities.  She is the founder and CEO of the non-profit The Color of Excellence and an Assistant Federal Public Defender in Maryland, as well as a wife, mom, friend, and mentor. She combines her passion for equity and true justice with her litigation, training, and administrative skills to manage it all.
