We mourn the loss of Douglas Wilson, a well-respected figure in the field of public defense whose recent passing marks the end of an era. Doug’s dedication to justice was unparalleled. His role as a founding member of the National Association for Public Defense underscores the profound impact he had on the community and the void his departure leaves.

Doug served on the NAPD Steering Committee and chaired the NAPD Systems Builders Committee for a number of years prior to retirement. As part of this committee, Doug helped conduct assessments of the Regional Public Defender’s Office, which is the Texas Capital Defender Office. He worked to recruit public defender chiefs in Houston, Pittsburgh, and El Paso.

As we reflect on Doug Wilson’s storied career and the principles he stood for, we are reminded of the importance of continuing his work. His legacy is not just in the successes he achieved but also in the inspiration he provides for future public defense professionals.

He will be deeply missed
