This fall, up to 45 defenders from around the country will convene in Brooklyn to collaborate and develop new media and advocacy skills for use outside of the courtroom to challenge the criminal “justice” narrative and move lawmakers to change laws. During the training, defenders will learn from leaders in array of disciplines how to leverage traditional and social media, technology, storytelling, language, policy advocacy, collaboration, and campaigns to drive transformative change.

Speakers and trainers include Jon Rapping, Alec Karakatsanis, Andrea James, Dwayne Betts, Samuel Sinyangwe, Kassandra Frederique, and Emily Bazelon. Additional speaker and trainer announcements to come.

Public defenders are increasingly speaking out about the injustices we fight against and are using an array of media tools and organizing strategies to advocate for transformative systemic change. Whether or not you’ve ever used social media, organized, or fought for broader changes in the law, you are welcome to apply to add to your advocacy arsenal.

The application is now live and accepting submissions from practicing public defenders on a rolling basis until July 15.
