  • About the Firm: Multnomah Defenders, Inc. (MDI) is a non-profit public interest law firm established in 1982. Our mission is to provide high quality representation to our clients and to treat every client with dignity and respect. MDI operates with a staff of over 80 people, including attorneys, legal assistants, a social worker, case managers and investigators. MDI lawyers defend adults and juveniles in courts of Oregon in criminal, juvenile, contempt and appellate matters. MDI is located downtown in the World Trade Center at 10 SW Salmon Street, next door to the Multnomah County Courthouse.

     

    Position: MDI seeks applications from case managers passionate about promoting services and providing advocacy to our clients. This position has a primary focus on serving the BIPOC community and those who are overrepresented and underserved in the criminal legal system. The case manager in this position works closely and collaboratively with MDI’s social worker, case manager, and criminal trial attorneys. The case manager in this position would ideally start in early July 2026. This position is part of the bargaining unit.

     

    Qualifications:

    ·         Empathy and experience working with the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated; commitment to working specifically with public defender clients

    ·         Demonstrated ability to provide culturally responsive services to diverse client populations

    ·         Competency in data management, Microsoft Word, Outlook, and basic office equipment

    ·         Familiarity with Multnomah County based social service resources

    ·         Preference for applicants with 1-3 years of experience

     

    Responsibilities:

    ·         Conduct interviews and needs assessments with clients

    ·         Work closely with attorneys and engage in advocacy on behalf of clients, and create individualized alternative-sentencing plans that show how clients’ needs are better served in the community than in jail or prison

    ·         Develop community-based treatment plans for criminal defendants, as well as supporting efforts towards increased housing, health, and relationship and financial stability

    ·         Collaborate with other agencies to ensure that appropriate services are provided to clients

    ·         Practice tools and concepts such as motivational interviewing, assertive engagement, trauma-informed care, biopsychosocial assessments, holistic-based service, and harm reduction

    ·         Maintain accurate, complete, and up-to-date  notes in our office-wide case management software in addition to documentation software utilized only by the social work team

    ·         Advocacy during court hearings, which could include occasional testimony

    ·         Will require travel, court appearances, visits to jail facilities, and other locations in the community when appropriate

     

    Compensation: Salary range is $53,017.91 to $83,991.96 depending on experience. Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance provided. MDI covers 90% of individual and family medical and dental insurance plans. Employer contributes 10% of salary to 401k after six months of employment, with optional additional employee contributions up to $23,000 and $30,500 for employees over 50. Generous sick time, vacation time, and annual merit-based reviews with raises are also provided. Position includes free access to two on-site gyms, including one with views of the Willamette River. A Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) is provided. All employees receive 10 paid holidays a year, plus 2 floating holidays.
