• We’re looking for an attorney who believes the Constitution’s protections must remain
strongest where the stakes are highest.

The Federal Defender Program for the Middle District of Alabama is seeking a Capital Habeas
Attorney to join our team in Montgomery. This is a meaningful opportunity to carry forward a
profound civil rights legacy by ensuring that the promise of justice extends to every person, even
those society has too often forgotten.

In our Capital Habeas Unit (CHU), we provide zealous representation to indigent prisoners on
Alabama’s Death Row, challenging unconstitutional convictions and sentences in the Federal District
Courts, the Eleventh Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

    What you’ll be doing:
This is “front-line” social justice work. You will manage a caseload at various stages of
post-conviction review, which includes writing briefs and motions, reviewing voluminous records,
and developing litigation strategies. You’ll work as part of an interdisciplinary team to conduct
investigations, meet with clients and their families, and advocate at evidentiary hearings and oral
arguments. After training, you’ll also help with community outreach and training for the private
    bar.

    What we’re looking for:
We need a person with excellent written and oral advocacy skills who thrives in a team environment.
    • Experience: While we are interested in prior capital habeas work, law practice, or federal
clerkships, experience is not required for the right candidate.
    • Requirements: You must be a member in good standing of a State Bar by your start date, have a
valid driver’s license, and be willing to handle some overnight travel.

    The Details:
    • Salary & Benefits: Salary depends on experience and is comparable to the Office of the U.S.
Attorney. We offer an excellent benefits package.
    • Commitment: To stay focused on our mission, attorneys in this office may not engage in private
    law practice.

    How to Apply:
If you have the rigor, compassion, and courage for this work, please email a letter describing your
interest, a resume, references, and a writing sample in a single PDF
    document to: ALM_Employment@fd.org.
