Requirements
 
  • Experience in and demonstrated commitment to racial equity, civil rights, and criminal punishment reform
  • Experience in and demonstrated commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income people and people of color
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in complex legal analysis and writing, as reflected in written work product and a writing sample
  • A minimum of three years of relevant legal experience after law school, preferably consisting of (a) significant federal civil litigation, including discovery, motion practice, and significant legal writing; (b) significant state litigation—including both summary and plenary proceedings, discovery, motion practice, significant legal writing, and hearings concerning injunctive relief—related to the enforcement of federal, state, or local anti-discrimination or civil rights statutes; or (c) significant administrative or policy work in correctional systems. A judicial clerkship may satisfy one year of this experiential requirement
  • Excellent written and oral advocacy skills
  • Excellent judgment
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including an ability to foster constructive, respectful working relationships with colleagues, clients, and coalition partners, and an understanding of the importance of principles of diversity and inclusion in the workplace
  • A demonstrated ability to work under time-sensitive circumstances and adhere to agreed-upon deadlines
  • Admission to the New York State bar or eligibility to waive into the New York State bar
  • Desirable, but not required, experiences include experience with legislative or regulatory drafting; experience with legislative advocacy; familiarity with the experience of incarceration; work with community organizations; knowledge of New York carceral systems; proficiency in Spanish
