Family Defense Supervising Attorney
Responsibilities
The Family Defense Supervising Attorney will supervise 3-4 attorneys. The Family Defense Supervising Attorney embodies how we approach this work in three aspects:
Client-Centered Direct Representation of Clients

Supervises attorneys representing clients against child abuse and child neglect allegations in juvenile deprived proceedings.

Ensures quality representation from first show cause appearance to case closure.
- Center decision-making on all matters on clients, with a focus on working to meet client’s goals.
Holistic & Collaborative Representation

Promotes effective collaboration with other members of a client’s defense team, including advocates, social workers and investigators to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to combat the variety of social service, governmental and legal burdens placed on a client.

Promotes effective collaboration with other attorneys and supervisors on representation of clients across practice areas, Including addressing gaps in coordinating legal strategies, assigning co-counseling for appearances/hearings.

Support Attorneys in developing and elevating the standard of practice through innovative motions, arguments, and strategies

Assessing and addressing ongoing training and development of needs of attorneys, in order to provide excellent and zealous representation to our clients.
Qualifications
To be eligible, applicants must have:

More than 5 years of experience in the field of indigent defense; strong preference for parent defense experience, or criminal defense experience.

J.D. from an American Bar Association accredited law school

Membership in good standing to the Oklahoma bar or eligibility for admission to the Oklahoma Bar
Applicants must demonstrate:

Experience supervising attorneys

Willingness to develop knowledge and expertise in juvenile deprived law

Ability to litigate and confidently engage in skillful negotiations with judges, prosecutors, and other actors within the systems our clients navigate

Excellent research, writing and courtroom advocacy skills

Ability and desire to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams

A commitment to defending indigent individuals in the North Tulsa community throughout at all stages of juvenile deprived proceedings

Experience and interest in working in and with racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities
-
Ability to think critically and quickly on their feet

Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Applicants, if hired, must:

Be licensed by the Oklahoma Bar at the time of hire or submit the appropriate materials necessary for waiver within 45 days of hire
