Truncated Version of Job Description: 

  • Completes individualized client advisements for non-citizen public defender clients using up-to-date research methods and best practice standards in a timely manner.
  • Provides immigration law support to attorneys through all stages of legal representation where the client’s immigration status could be adversely affected such as plea negotiations and sentencing arguments. Assists in identifying alternative dispositions that minimize the immigration consequences for the client. Assists attorneys with crafting legal arguments and strategies to mitigate immigration consequences; and wherever possible, provides strategic guidance on ameliorating those consequences.
  • Assists with the system-wide training and practice advisories to employees on the intersection of criminal and immigration law.
  • Attends annual trainings in criminal and immigration law to remain current on the law and legal trends. Researches current and developing trends in immigration and criminal law intersection and defense strategies and keeps abreast of changes in the law. 
  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Under the general direction of the Immigration Program Director, performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned. 

Education and Experience:

  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an ABA accredited law school; licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado. If not licensed in Colorado, is eligible for licensure in Colorado and secures law license to practice in Colorado within 6-months of hire.
  • A minimum of at least three years’ experience in criminal defense or immigration law

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience representing clients in removal proceedings in any jurisdiction including Denver Immigration Court.
  • Experience representing clients in trial-level criminal proceedings in Colorado.
  • Experience with criminal defense and immigration law intersection, including applying the categorical approach.
  • A demonstrated commitment to serving a culturally diverse, low-income population
