The North Carolina Office of the Appellate Defender is seeking qualified applicants for an Assistant Appellate Defender position. The Office of the Appellate Defender represents indigent persons convicted of criminal offenses in the North Carolina appellate courts.

Requirements
  • A law degree from an ABA accredited law school and a license to practice law in North Carolina are required.
  • This position requires regular, in-person attendance at the office in Durham, NC, although telework privileges may be allowed pursuant to the office’s telework policy.
  • Employer seeks applicants with experience as a judicial law clerk, or as a trial attorney representing clients in criminal cases in trial courts as an assistant public defender or attorney in private practice. Applicants from out of state with experience in an appellate or trial level public defender’s office are encouraged to apply, although a North Carolina Bar license will be required before representing clients in North Carolina courts.  The starting salary range for this position is $54,000 to $85,000, depending on experience.  Equal opportunity employer.
