• The Wayne County Public Defender is a mid-sized office practicing high quality, client-centered, holistic and innovative criminal defense in a rural setting. Our northern border is Lake Ontario, and just to the south is Western NY’s beautiful Finger Lakes Region. To the west we have the bustling small city of Rochester, and two hours to the east is the unparalleled Adirondack Park. 

    We currently have an opening for an Assistant Public Defender. This attorney will carry a reasonable mixed caseload of clients facing misdemeanor and felony charges and may have the opportunity to be involved in various other representation, including Raise the Age clients in Youth Part, Drug Treatment Court, parole violations, appeals and mitigation work. Salary ranges from $86,343 to $116,583 DOE, with additional compensation for required shared participation in our Centralized Arraignment Program. Demonstrated dedication to practicing indigent defense in a team setting required.

    Requirements
    • JD or equivalent, Admission in New York State
    • Residency in Wayne County NY or surrounding counties
    • Dedication to practicing indigent criminal defense in a team environment
    • Public Defense representation and trial experience preferred, but not required
    • Valid driver's license
