    Salary Range: $66,538 – $71,378
    Kalamazoo Defender is an independent non-profit organization that provides legal representation to the adult indigent population charged with a crime within Kalamazoo County. We take a holistic approach, employing compassionate professionals who work with our clients to identify and address additional needs beyond their legal case. In collaboration with our robust network of area service providers, we aim to connect our clients to relevant support services.

    THE JOB:
    Kalamazoo Defender seeks a full-time Investigator to plan and execute investigations for criminal defense cases. Reporting to the Chief Investigator and collaborating with attorneys and other members of the defense team, the Investigator will perform tasks such as client and witness interviews, evidence collection, scene analysis, and record gathering.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Plan and execute investigations, utilizing appropriate methods and tracking progress through departmental systems.
    • Conduct fieldwork, including crime scene analysis, evidence collection, surveillance, and photography.
    • Interview clients, witnesses, and other relevant parties to gather critical information.
    • Analyze and preserve evidence; prepare court exhibits such as maps, diagrams, and visual presentations.
    • Serve subpoenas and testify in court regarding investigative findings.
    • Maintain accurate, well-organized case files and collaborate effectively with the defense team.
    • Embrace a holistic, client-centered approach to indigent defense.
    • Perform investigative duties outside of traditional business hours when needed.
    • Participate in training programs and maintain current knowledge of investigative practices.
    • Maintain availability to other staff members for consultation and education.
    • Perform any other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall effectiveness and success of the defense team.

    Requirements
    QUALIFICATIONS: REQUIRED: • Valid Michigan driver’s license with ability and willingness to travel. • Strong commitment to Kalamazoo Defender's mission and values; • Ability to engage and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds; • Commitment to cultural awareness, professionalism, confidentiality, compassion, and integrity; • Strong critical thinking, communication, and organizational skills. • Experience in investigative work in social services, criminal justice, or law enforcement (5+ years preferred). • Ability to work outside of normal business office hours. • Ability to prioritize work tasks while working both collaboratively and independently • Ability to locate, obtain, review, analyze, and summarize relevant records and data; • Excellent interviewing and communication skills with the ability to document clear work product and case notes. PREFERRED: • Michigan Professional Investigator license. • Knowledge of legal procedures and investigative techniques (e.g., interviewing, digital forensics). • Bachelor’s degree in a related field. • Bilingual abilities.
