SUMMARY:Gut-Brain Axis Dysfunction: Criminal Justice and Forensic Mental Health Considerations
DESCRIPTION:The gut-brain axis is the communication network that links cognitive and emotional processing of the brain to the body’s gastrointestinal functions. The bedrock of this axis is bidirectional communication between the central nervous system and the enteric nervous system. The gut-brain axis plays a critical role in food intake\, metabolism\, insulin levels\, perceptions of satiety\, and mood to name a few. The functioning of the gut-brain axis can be influenced by diet\, sleep quality\, environmental toxins\, social surroundings\, and the experience of stress among other factors. Emerging research is also finding that gut-brain axis dysfunction may have significant implications for problematic\, concerning\, and antisocial behaviors. Designed for professionals working in criminal justice\, forensic mental health\, and legal settings\, this training provides attendees with a working understanding of the causes\, consequences\, and interventions associated with gut-brain axis dysfunction among criminal justice and forensic mental health-based populations. Other topics discussed in this training include neurocriminology\, emotional dysregulation\, impulsive behaviors\, anger\, aggression\, and violence\, substance use disorders\, mental health conditions\, hormonal dysfunction\, prenatal and postnatal trauma\, other life adversities\, central nervous system dysfunction\, allostatic load\, biological despair\, HPA axis dysregulation\, inflammation\, and sleep disturbances. A primary goal of this training is to learn why criminal justice\, forensic mental health\, and legal professionals should become gut-brain axis informed. Empirically based research findings will be highlighted throughout this training. \nJerrod Brown\, Ph.D.\, M.A.\, M.S.\, M.S.\, M.S.\, is a professor\, trainer\, researcher\, and consultant with multiple years of experience teaching collegiate courses. SUMMARY:Sleep Disturbances and Disorders: Criminal Justice\, Forensic Mental Health\, and Legal Considerations
DESCRIPTION:Adequate sleep is the foundation to optimal emotional\, behavioral\, social\, and physical health functioning. Unfortunately\, problems associated with sleep are a common issue among individuals in the general population\, with even higher rates reported among criminal justice and forensic mental health-involved populations. As such\, it is imperative for these impacted individuals to receive appropriate supports and services from professional providers who understand the complexities of sleep dysfunction and its implications for concerning\, problematic\, criminal\, and vulnerable behaviors. Designed for professionals working in criminal justice\, forensic mental health\, and legal settings\, this training provides attendees with a working understanding of the causes\, consequences\, and interventions associated with sleep disturbances and disorders among criminal justice and forensic mental health-based populations. Other topics discussed in this training include anger\, aggression\, and violence\, incarceration\, suggestibility\, misinformation effect\, fantasy proneness\, false confessions\, vulnerability and victimization\, executive dysfunction\, error monitoring deficits\, uncertainty\, rule following problems\, carelessness\, problematic coping strategies\, circadian rhythm misalignment. language impairment\, auditory processing deficits\, social cognition\, sluggish cognitive tempo\, comprehension deficits\, fatigue\, information processing deficits\, choice-making deficits\, abstract reasoning deficits\, memory confusion\, self-regulation deficits\, and sensory processing limitations to name a few. Empirically based research findings examples will be highlighted throughout this training. \nJerrod Brown\, Ph.D.\, M.A.\, M.S.\, M.S.\, M.S.\, is a professor\, trainer\, researcher\, and consultant with multiple years of experience teaching collegiate courses. Jerrod is also the founder and CEO of the American Institute for the Advancement of Forensic Studies (AIAFS). SUMMARY:Virtual Open Space on Public Defense Independence
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nProtecting Independence \nTo serve their clients\, public defenders must be free from political and judicial control. NAPD’s Foundational Principles and the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Ten Principles of a Public Defense Delivery System therefore discourage practices that undermine defense independence\, like: \n\nJustices controlling oversight boards\nLaw enforcement officials having oversight roles\nGovernors having exclusive appointment powers\nCounty officials removing directors at will\nJudges selecting defense lawyers for their courtrooms\nJudges restricting defense expenses\n\nWhen independence is challenged\, NAPD makes our voice heard\, most recently in places like Connecticut\, Louisiana\, and Colorado. We are now partnering with the ABA Criminal Justice Section and Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defense on a Task Force on Public Defense Independence. NAPD and the ABA Task Force are co-hosting this event. \nThis virtual Open Space event is an opportunity for defenders from around the country to workshop local issues and shape national advocacy on this key issue. \nOpen Space Format \nRather than having experts deliver presentations and answer questions\, Open Spaces are designed for participants to start their own “rooms” for discussions and move between those rooms freely\, guided by where they feel they are learning and contributing. \nWe will have a brief opening in which participants offer their own topics for discussion\, then have two rounds of discussion in which they can move from room to room. We will close by sharing notes from each discussion\, which will be sent to all meeting participants. \nPast virtual Open Spaces on recruitment and workloads have produced practical strategies for addressing those challenges. Please join us on September 19 to discuss how to take action to protect the integrity of public defense systems.

SUMMARY:Social Work Meetup: Writing Without Placing Blame
DESCRIPTION:In mitigation writing\, there is a delicate balance of identifying the harms done to the client while not (always) overtly placing blame on the parent or adult provider. The client may benefit from the parent/provider as a lifeline for their future\, or may not see the situation in the same way as you; thus\, discretion in writing (and blaming) is important. How do you address intergenerational trauma\, or other harms committed by the parent or adult provider\, while still working to preserve the role of the parent/provider in the client’s life for the future? \nStephanne Cline Thornton is a West Virginia native who has worked in and around criminal defense and mitigation for more than 20 years in Georgia\, Colorado\, and West Virginia. She is currently the Social Work Training and Resource Coordinator for NAPD\, Clinical Director for the West Virginia Judicial and Lawyer Assistance Program\, and owner of Transform Legal\, a consultancy focused on mitigation\, training\, and sustainability. As a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and Master Addiction Counselor\, Stephanne focuses on proper assessment for and access to trauma and substance use disorder treatment to ensure the health and well-being of affected individuals. Stephanne is on the Trauma-Informed Care Network Speakers Bureau and uses that platform to call attention to the intersection of secondary traumatic stress and legal practice. She approaches her work with clients\, lawyers\, social workers\, and mitigation specialists through a contextualized mitigation lens. \n

SUMMARY:Team Mitigation Institute - Seattle
DESCRIPTION:Mitigation created by a team of professionals in non-capital cases is increasingly becoming the standard of practice. This bring-your-own-case institute is designed for defense teams to work on the mitigation for a non-capital client.  The institute is a mix of presentations followed up by small group work facilitated by experienced faculty.   Participants are encouraged to come with their defense team (attorneys\, investigators\, paralegals\, social workers\, mitigation specialists and other sentencing advocates).  However\, if all of your team members are unable to attend\, sole participants are also welcome. \nSmall groups will be assigned to promote discussion among teams handling similar types of cases (i.e.\, offense charged\, juvenile or mental illness).  In addition\, some teams will work on cases where clients have a realistic chance of diversion while others may work toward reducing the term of incarceration for clients. \nPricing before July 15\, 2024   $450 NAPD Members\, $600 Non Members \nPricing July 16 and beyond  $550 NAPD Members\, $700 Non Members \nAugust 16th registration deadline \nWe know you may need to convince someone else to approve you joining us.   Check out our Convince Your Boss Resources for a sample letter and other information. \nApply for registration fee scholarship here   Scholarship deadline August 1. \nWe have a hotel room block with the Silver Cloud Hotel Broadway for $229 per night plus taxes and fees. SUMMARY:Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD): Criminal Justice\, Forensic Mental Health\, and Legal Considerations
DESCRIPTION:Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopment disorder caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. This spectrum of disorders is characterized by deficits in cognitive (e.g.\, inhibition\, information processing\, and memory) and adaptive functioning (e.g.\, communication skills\, problem-solving\, and decision-making). These symptoms place some individuals with FASD at risk for involvement in the criminal justice system. Once involved\, individuals with FASD usually struggle to make legal decisions\, participates in their legal defense\, and conform to conditions of incarceration or community supervision. Designed for professionals working in criminal justice\, forensic mental health\, and legal settings\, this training broadens awareness of FASD and identifies practices and techniques designed to improve outcomes when working with persons with suspected or confirmed FASD. Other topics discussed in this training include executive dysfunction\, suggestibility\, confabulation\, gullibility\, auditory processing deficits\, alexithymia\, theory of mind (ToM)\, sluggish cognitive tempo\, comprehension deficits\, sleep disturbances and fatigue\, information processing deficits\, choice-making deficits\, abstract reasoning deficits\, memory confusion\, self-regulation deficits\, and sensory processing limitations to name a few. Empirically based research findings and case study examples will be highlighted throughout this training. \nJerrod Brown\, Ph.D.\, M.A.\, M.S.\, M.S.\, M.S.\, is a professor\, trainer\, researcher\, and consultant with multiple years of experience teaching collegiate courses. SUMMARY:We the Defenders (for all but the social work track)
DESCRIPTION:This August 12 – 15\, 2024\, in Detroit\, Michigan at Wayne State University\, one of the top research and community engagement centers in the country with a focus on holistic defense\, NAPD will bring together the pivotal workers in defense-based systems. “We the Defenders” is the essential conference for public defense investigators\, mitigation specialists\, social workers\, paralegals\, and other core staff – all roles except attorneys – who play a critical role in defense-based work. Development opportunities\, networking\, collaboration\, and sustainability are woven into the various workshops\, small groups\, plenaries\, and sessions at We the Defenders. This is a celebration of the diversity\, skill\, and dedication that you bring to the public defense community and an acknowledgment that every member of the team is vital. We hope to see you in Detroit! \nPricing before June 17\, 2024\, $595 NAPD Members\, $695 Non Members \nPricing June 18 and beyond  $645 NAPD Members\, $745 Non Members \nJuly 29th registration deadline \nNeed help with this registration process?  Watch this video.   \nScholarship Application – Due June 1 \nCheck out the current schedule – still developing \nWe know you may need to convince someone else to approve you joining us.   Check out our Convince Your Boss Resources for a sample letter and other information. \nLimited Hotel Room block rates available at Hilton Garden Inn Detroit Downtown and DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel Detroit Downtown \nWe will provide transportation from the Hotel to the Conference and back again each day via  via the Art Bus \nFrom past participants \nThe NAPD “We The Defenders” conference is a “Must Attend Event!” I’ve attended twice (Indianapolis 2017 & Albuquerque 2023)\, and each time I walk away with new resources\, new ideas\, new contacts and a renewed sense of enthusiasm to share what I learned with co-workers and excited to implement knowledge gained to better assist my clients! It’s inspiring to meet others who are also “TEAM DEFENSE!” We stand together and make our voices heard! \n‘WTD’ has ignited a fire in me to be more actively involved overall. I certainly want to attend everything NAPD has to offer. Until the next time I attend\, I will take advantage of any opportunities provided to increase my knowledge in mitigation to better serve our people. Learning never stops in my book! Thank you NAPD for this feeling of empowerment. \nMy first NAPD conference and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I returned to work inspired and rejuvenated – I didn’t even realize I needed rejuvenating. It was wonderful to be in a sea of professionals who do the same work I do. I felt seen and heard\, especially when discussing some of the challenges we face. It was a wonderful conference\, and I am happy I went.
